Robert A. Weller received a PhD in 1978 from SIO working with Russ Davis on field studies of upper
ocean responses to atmospheric forcing. , The pair developed the Vector Measuring Current Meter--this
patented device remains the most accurate current meter for measuring horizontal velocity in the upper
ocean. Since 1979, as a Senior Scientist in physical oceanography, Robert directs the WHOI's Cooperative
Institute for Climate and Ocean Research.
Over the years Weller as been a pioneer in developing tools and technologies that enable scientists to
investigate upper ocean processes on scales from meters to tens of kilometers and with an accuracy never
before available to them. In recognition of Weller's distinguished contributions to ocean science, he
was named Secretary of the Navy/Chief of Naval Operations Oceanographic Research Chair by the Office of
Naval Research.
He has served as the Secretary of the Navy's Chair in Oceanography. Bob currently co-chairs the U.S.
CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group (SRG), is a member of the international CLIVAR-SRG, and co-chairs the
International Time Series Science Team (OceanSITES). Dr. Weller is also a member of the National Research
Council's Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate and has served on several NRC committees over the
years.
