Vittorio Barale was awarded a MS at SIO in 1982 and a PhD in 1986. Presently, as senior Scientist in the
European Commission's Joint Research Centre, Barale's research focuses on the use of satellite remote sensing
for studying the marine environment. The JRC, is one of the largest international research organizations in Europe,
with headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, and campuses across the European Union.
Vittorio's involvement in marine science started in 1977, after graduating
from the University of Milan in Physics. While a post-doctoral fellow at SIO's former
Visibility Lab, he decided to pursue a career in oceanography and enrolled as a graduate
student, obtaining a MS and PhD by applying satellite oceanographic tools to the phytoplankton
patchiness problem. After returning to Europe, Vittorio consulted for various companies and
organizations and joined the JRC in 1990. Vittorio's Institute of Environment and Sustainability
is responsible for relations with the international scientific community and major space agencies.
Vittorio's current research continues to focus on applying remote sensing to understanding the ocean processes of
Europe's marginal and enclosed basins. He often enjoys graduate lecturing and serving as an advisor to graduate students.
