Students at Scripps
On 6/1/1967, in recognition of the need for greater flexibility in a growing, strongly
interdisciplinary field, the UCSD departments of Earth Science, Oceanography and Marine
Biology reorganized to form a single Graduate Department of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
The Department started with six curricular groups; Biological Oceanography, Geophysics, Marine Biology,
Marine Chemistry, Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography. A seventh curricular group, Applied Ocean
Sciences, was added in 1968 and the eighth group, Climate Sciences was created in 1996.
The Marine Geology group later changed their name to Geosciences and the Marine Chemistry group later
became known as the Marine Chemistry/Geochemistry group.
ENROLLMENT OVERVIEW 1967 - 2005
In 2003, the year of our Centennial, the Scripps Department experienced the highest enrollment in its
100-year history. The enrollment numbers have continued to increase. We are now at an all-time high of
249 students. Female students, who started at only 22% of the student body, now make up 51% of enrolled students.

The following graph shows student enrollment by curricular group from 1967 through 2005.
The climate science curricular group was not established until 1996:

APPLICANTS TO SCRIPPS PROGRAM
The following graph shows the number of total applicants to our program for the past ten years. The
spike in 2003 was the result of a change in the admissions procedure for that year, that created a
double-counting in a couple of curricular groups.

APPLICANTS TO SCRIPPS PROGRAM BY CURRICULAR GROUP
The following graph shows the number of applicants by curricular group for the past ten years. Some students
apply to more than one group. Again, the spike in 2003 was due to a change in the admissions procedure.

Since 1996, Scripps has offered admission to an average of 22% percent of students who apply.
