AWARDS AND HONORSRoyal Swedish Academy of Science — Hans Pettersson Bronze MedalThe Royal Swedish Academy of Science was founded in 1739; it based itself on the Royal Society of London and the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. Through relations with these other academies, the Royal Swedish Academy helps to maintain international contact and communication among scientific researchers. In commemoration of Hans Pettersson's achievements, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences organized a conference in August 1997 -- 'In the Wake of the Swedish Deep Sea Expedition: Development of Paleoceanography as a New Field of Science' and had a medal made in honor of Hans Pettersson. The front of the medal shows a portrait of Hans Pettersson, the back the four-masted schooner Albatross, which served as the expedition ship. The first Pettersson Medal in gold was awarded to Professor Gustaf Arrhenius of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1997. It was decided that additional medal copies in bronze should be distributed to scientists working in the spirit of Hans Pettersson." Recipients (* indicates deceased)
