A Look at Scripps Alumni as of June 30, 2006
1,490 students have received their degrees for work done at Scripps, one of the oldest, largest, and most respected
centers for global ocean and earth science research and graduate training in the world.
From 1903 to June of 2006:
- 1,098 students (74%) received a Ph.D. degree, with 159 of those students obtaining a master of science degree along the way
- 392 students (26%) were recipients of a master's degree alone
- 1,145 students were male
- 345 students were female
- 297 students (20%) entered as citizens of one of 47 nations. The largest group entering
from Canada, followed by the Republic of China, and Germany
Scripps is proud of the accomplishments of our graduates. Scripps alumni are national and international leaders in
the ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences. One measure of our success can be found in the quality of our graduates.
Among our alumni we have:
- One College President
- Five College Deans
- 21 Academic Department Heads/Chairs
- 48 Directors of Scientific Laboratories/Programs/Organizations
- 234 Tenured-Track Professors located at 93 U.S. Universities and 19 countries
throughout the world
- 124 Research Scientists located at 32 U.S. Universities and 12 countries throughout the
world
- Two Naval Commanders
- Human Space Flight Astronaut
The graphs that follow are a compilation of data collected from 982 Scripps alumni who responded to our request for information.
Of those who responded:
- 82% were Ph.D. recipients
- 18% were master's degree recipients.
